Nowadays, Facebook is becoming more transparent and has evolved into a tool for work and personal life alike. Therefore, it is important to separate your “real” friends from your “work” friends. You don’t want your boss checking out you’re playing Mafia Wars or Pet Society during work or see your photo with your girlfriend. Creating two separate accounts for “Work” and “Personal” is a big no-no as it violates Facebook T&C to have more than one account.

Here is a quick workaround to separate “Work” and “Friends” and still having the same account!

Step 1

Create a Separate Work list

On Facebook homepage, click on “more” on the left navigation menu.

Click on “Create New List” and a pop up window will appear.

Name the list “Work”, “Colleagues”, “Professional”, whichever you like (in this tutorial, we’ll use “Work”).

Click on the thumbnails of your “Work” friends to add them into the list.

And finally, click on “Create List” and you’re done with Step 1.

Step 2

Privacy Settings

Mouseover Settings tab on the top navigation menu and click on “Privacy Settings“.

Click on the drop-down list for “Basic Info” and select “Customize…”.

Enter “Work” in the field for “Except These People” and click “Okay”.

Apply these steps for the others.

Maybe you want to leave the “Education Info” and “Work Info” as it is since there is no harm for colleagues and potential employers to look at these.

Don’t forget to apply these for “Photo Album Privacy Settings” so your colleagues or boss won’t see your personal photos. And you may want to apply these in the “Application Settings” too and prevent your boss to see that you’ve been “Superpoking” every hour during work!
